Half O scale models are 1:87th scale, also known as 3.5mm scale. On the model, 3.5mm equals 1 foot (12 inches) on the prototype or full-size item and travels on 16.5mm track. While the OO scale is commonly used for models of British prototypes, they are 1:76th scale, or 4mm to the foot. The trains continue to run on the same 16.5 mm gauge track as HO models.
Australian models are in HO scale, which is equivalent to 1/76 scale. This scale is also popular in the United States and Europe. The traditional Peco Code 100 track is an excellent place to begin.
British models are in OO scale, which is 1/87 scale. Brands like Bachman Branchline have a range of model trains and accessories in this scale, while the traditional Peco Code 100 track is a perfect starting point.
