Radio Control - A brief history of Radio Control
RC Controllers were technically created in 1894 but didn't see commercial applications and refinement until the late 1940's (with single channel self-built systems coming out first before commercial pre-built systems). In the early 21st century, 2.4 gigahertz spread spectrum RC control systems were gaining in popularity and soon enough became the industry standard in latter years. Some RC companies even offer conversion kits for older RC Controllers so they can be upgraded to work with more modern products.
Remote Controls in the 80's and earlier had different tiers, in particular 2 tiers. The "Standard" tier remote controls and the "Higher" tier. The "Standard" tier remote controls usually had the "stick type" controllers as the main differentiating key point. while the "Higher" tier Remote control units had a "wheel type" for directional control, and usually featured a trigger for speed control. Nowadays the main standard usually tends to be more of the "wheel type" controller because it gives you a more finer control of your vehicles turning, alongside with a pressure sensitive trigger. Thus making your vehicle handle more like a real car/airplane/boat etc...
With the history out of the way, the best way to determine what model RC Controller is right for you, is to see what your RC model needs. Is it a rockcrawler which might need mixed steering, and finer controls over your differential? Is it a drift car that needs finer gear control, and more responsive steering?
Whatever the case, we do recommend you look over what exactly your vehicle needs, and then looking for the right controller for you.
